Antioch questions

What people here ask us first.

More useful than the average is knowing how to read the age of the one you own, because each type shows its wear differently. A gas cooktop nearing the end lights slowly or unevenly, burns yellow-tipped flames that do not clear when the ports are cleaned, has caps and heads pitted through with corrosion, and has knobs that turn with grit in them; each is repairable, but all of them together say the cooktop is old. A coil cooktop shows its age in the receptacles: pitted, blackened terminals under the elements and a smell of hot wiring when a burner is on high. A radiant glass cooktop shows it as zones that take longer to reach heat, a fine crazing in the glass around the hottest zone, and a touch panel that needs a firmer press than it used to. An induction cooktop shows it as a cooling fan that has grown loud, zones that throttle back during long cooks, and controls that respond erratically when the glass is hot.

Put the symptoms against the type's usual life, fifteen to twenty years for gas, thirteen to fifteen for coil, ten to fifteen for radiant and induction, and you have a fair estimate of what is left. A cooktop showing one symptom has a repair in front of it. One showing several is at the stage where the next expensive part decides it.

The diagnostic visit is $89, credited to the repair if you proceed, and the technician gives you that estimate on the visit.

When the freezer that will not freeze is the freezer compartment of a refrigerator, the shared cooling system changes the diagnosis. Both compartments are cooled by one evaporator, usually in the freezer, with a fan and a damper sending some of the cold air to the fresh-food side. So the combination of symptoms tells the story. Freezer warm and refrigerator warm together means the whole system has stopped: a start relay, the compressor, the condenser fan, dirty condenser coils or a sealed-system fault, in roughly that order of likelihood and cost. Freezer cold but refrigerator warm means the cold is being made but not delivered: the evaporator fan, the damper, or an evaporator iced over from a defrost fault. Freezer slowly warming while the refrigerator holds is usually airflow again, or a door gasket on the freezer side that has stopped sealing.

Two checks before calling: that the freezer is not packed against the vent at the back, and that nothing is holding the door slightly open.

The repairs on the first two lists are routine, apart from the sealed system, which is the one case that gets weighed against the refrigerator's age. Our diagnostic visit is $89, applied to the repair when you go ahead, and the technician reads both compartments' temperatures before naming a part.

It depends on which appliance, because at twenty years they are not all the same bet. A twenty-year-old gas range, electric range or dryer is often worth fixing. They are mechanically simple, the parts that fail (igniters, elements, thermostats, belts, rollers, switches) are inexpensive and still made, and a new one does not do the job noticeably better. A twenty-year-old chest freezer in the same category, with the caveat that it costs more to run than a new one. A twenty-year-old refrigerator or dishwasher is a harder case. Refrigerators from that era use a great deal more electricity than current models, and a sealed-system or compressor failure at that age is nearly always a replacement. Dishwashers from that era have usually been through enough hard water that the pump, the valve and the tub seals are all close to the end together, so fixing one part tends to be followed by the next.

The other consideration is the cutout. Many kitchens built around a twenty-year-old appliance were built to a size that is no longer standard, and replacing the appliance means altering the cabinet or countertop. That can tip a borderline decision back toward repair.

We will tell you which case you are in on the visit. The diagnostic fee is $89, credited to the repair if you go ahead.
