Most Vacaville appliance calls trace back to one thing: hard water. Dishwashers, ice makers and washers meet it first. We diagnose for scale before we quote, which is why our repairs here tend to stay fixed.

Where we work

Every Vacaville ZIP code, one number.

Vacaville is a city of about 103,994 people in Solano County. Around 72.4 percent of homes are detached houses and the median home was built in 1985, so most of what we see is a full-size kitchen and a garage or side-yard laundry. We run San Francisco Bay Area as one dispatch area, and Vacaville sits inside it with 3 delivery ZIP codes. Every delivery ZIP code in Vacaville is covered by the same number and the same team.

Vacaville questions

What people here ask us first.

Vacaville runs hard water, and scale builds on whatever meets the water first. In a dishwasher that is the inlet valve, the spray arms and the heating element. In an ice maker it is the fill tube and the water valve. Scale narrows the opening water has to pass through, so the machine fills slowly or unevenly and the symptoms start looking electrical long before anything electrical has failed. Hardness is also far from uniform here. The city does not draw everything from one place, and readings run from around 3 grains in some parts of town to about 18 in others. Two homes a few miles apart can genuinely be on different water and scale up at different rates, which is why a neighbor's experience with the same model is not a reliable guide to yours. Age of the plumbing compounds it. About 40 percent of homes here predate 1980, and older supply lines and shutoffs hold scale that keeps feeding an appliance after the appliance itself has been cleaned up. What that means for the repair is that we check water pressure and fill volume before replacing anything. Swapping a control board on a scaled machine fixes nothing and costs a great deal more. The tell-tale is a dishwasher that stopped cleaning well long before it stopped running, or an ice maker turning out small, hollow cubes.

A blocked vent, and it is the problem behind a large share of the others. Lint gets past the screen on every load, and over months and years it lines the flexible hose behind the dryer and the duct through the wall until the airflow drops to a fraction of what it should be. The dryer then takes two cycles to dry a load, runs hot enough to blow its thermal fuse, cooks its heating element, shuts down mid-cycle on a thermostat, or, in the worst case, ignites the lint. Blocked dryer vents are the most common cause of appliance fires.

The tell-tales: clothes take longer than they used to; the top of the dryer and the laundry room get hot; there is little air movement at the outside vent flap while the dryer runs; and a burning smell at the end of a cycle. The quick test is to disconnect the hose at the back and run a load. If it dries normally, the vent is the fault.

Clearing the vent is maintenance rather than a repair, but when a fuse or element has already gone because of it, the repair should include it. Our diagnostic visit is a flat $89, credited to the repair when you go ahead, and every no-heat call includes a look at the vent.
