GE French door and bottom freezer refrigerators fail on the defrost system first, with frost on the freezer back wall and a fresh food section that warms, then on the evaporator fan, the main control board and the ice maker. The through-the-door dispenser is a GE specialty and a GE weak point: the dispenser board, the auger motor, the water valve and the tubing that freezes in the door all come up. Ranges: igniters, elements and F codes
A GE gas range that will not light has a weak glow bar igniter nine times in ten. An electric range that will not heat has a bake element or a relay. F2 and F3 codes point at the temperature sensor, F7 at a stuck key on the control, F9 at the door lock circuit. Cafe and Profile ranges add a touch control and, on the induction models, a power board and a fan. The parts are available and priced sensibly.
Laundry and dishwashers
GE top load washers fail on the lid lock, the drive motor and its inverter board, and the drain pump. Front loaders add door locks, boots and bearings. What a GE repair costs in California.
A typical GE refrigerator repair, such as a defrost part, a fan, a board, an ice maker or a dispenser component, lands between $180 and $480 for parts and labor after the diagnostic fee is applied. What GE owners ask us first.
The defrost system leads on GE refrigerators of every layout. When the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the control that runs them fails, frost builds on the back wall of the freezer, the evaporator ices over, and the fresh food section warms while the freezer stays cold. On the French door and bottom freezer models that is the most common call we take, and the parts are inexpensive. Close behind is the evaporator fan, which fails outright or is stopped by that same ice, and the main control board, which on GE refrigerators of a certain age fails on the relay that runs the compressor or the defrost.
The dispenser is a GE specialty and a GE weak point. The water line that runs through the door freezes, the dispenser board stops responding, the auger motor for the ice fails, and the water valve at the back scales up on hard water. The ice maker itself, a fill tube that freezes, and a level arm that no longer sees the ice make up most of the rest of the water and ice complaints.
Side by side models add a damper between the compartments and a thermistor that reads wrong. Usually, yes, and for GE laundry the case is stronger than average because the parts are inexpensive and the machines are simple. A GE top load washer that stops with the lid lock light on has a lid lock, which is a single visit part. One that hums and will not agitate or spin has a drive motor or the inverter board that runs it, and on the recent models that is still a modest repair. A washer that will not drain has a drain pump. A front loader adds a door lock, a boot and, with age, bearings. A GE dryer that runs cold has a heating element, a thermal fuse or a gas igniter, and one that squeals has rollers, a belt or an idler; none of those costs much.
Replacement makes sense in a narrower set of cases. A front loader past ten years that needs bearings and has other wear, a top loader whose transmission has failed, a control board that is no longer made for an older model, or a cabinet rusted through in a damp laundry room. A dryer of almost any age with a single fault is a repair; one with a cracked drum or a dead motor and worn rollers at the same time is where a new machine wins.
